Cyclist falls off bike, punches teen on trail

A 14-year-old girl walking with friends on a trail in Orion Township over the weekend told police she was struck in the arm by a man after he fell off his bike while attempting to avoid bumping into the group.

Oakland County deputies said the teen was walking Saturday with three other children on Paint Creek Trail in the 700 block of Markdale Avenue when a man riding a red mountain bike approached them from behind. The group moved “to the left side of the trail to allow the rider to pass,” the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said in a report released Wednesday night.

That’s when the rider, described as about 50 years old, “accidentally ran into the 14 year old” and crashed. He became angry, according to the police report, and began yelling at the girl.

He then struck her on the left arm with a closed fist, police said. “He acted as though he was going to strike her again, but stopped and yelled at her to run,” according to deputies.

The man is described as a white or Hispanic man with gray hair and about 5 feet 3 inches tall. He was wearing a yellow bandana on his head, a white riding shirt with blue and black lettering, and black bike shorts.
