Police are trying to determine what led a 73-year-old man to stand in the roadway seconds before he was fatally struck by a passing car early Thursday in Chesterfield Township.

Ronald Macfadyen died after being struck around 6 a.m. on eastbound 23 Mile near the Interstate 94 overpass, according to a police press release. Macfadyen was rushed to McLaren Macomb hospital with serious injuries and later was pronounced dead.

The 41-year-old woman who struck Macfadyen remained on scene and was among multiple 911 callers, authorities said. Both victim and driver are from Chesterfield Township.

Preliminary investigation indicates the woman was traveling eastbound in her 2012 Chrysler mini-van on 23 Mile at the west side of the expressway overpass when she hit Macfadyen, who was standing in the middle of her lane.

Detectives at this time do not know why the man was standing in the roadway, in an area not typically used for pedestrian crossings. Speed, alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash, police said.

The investigation is ongoing. Witnesses are asked to contact Chesterfield Township Police Detective Frank Unger at (586) 949-3721.
