Woman, 71, falls from boat at Stony Creek Lake, drowns

A 71-year-old woman fell overboard when she was changing seats in a rowboat and likely drowned in Stony Creek Metropark, authorities say.

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office says the woman, identified as Joyce Kuhn, and her 58-year-old husband from Warren were fishing on Stony Creek Lake together in a 12-foot rowboat they had rented from the livery at the park in Shelby Township.

At one point, Kuhn stood up to switch seats with her husband but the boat tipped, tossing the couple into the lake around 9 a.m. Saturday. Neither was wearing a life vest.

A kayaker told police he heard the splash and paddled over to help. Kuhn’s husband held his wife and tried to keep her head above water, which was about 12 feet deep, police said. Others also tried to help, but couldn’t lift her out of the water until a Metroparks Police boat showed up.

With the help of Washington Township Fire and EMS, emergency responders were able to get Kuhn out of the water. They performed CPR on the woman and she was taken to Troy Beaumont Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office at (586) 307-9412.
