One person died and another was seriously hurt Friday afternoon after a two-car crash in Shelby Township, authorities said.

The local police and fire departments responded to the accident on Van Dyke between 23 Mile and 24 Mile at about 4:23 p.m.

A preliminary investigation found a red Ford Explorer was driving south when “it crossed the center median and struck a white Chevy Malibu driven by a 37-year-old man from Memphis,” police said in a statement.

The Chevy driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, identified as a 44-year-old man from Capac, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, police said.

No other injuries were reported. The crash remains under investigation.

“It is unknown at this time whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident,” police said Friday night.

Witnesses are asked to call the Shelby Township Police Department at (586) 731-2121 ext. 3.
