A Harrison Township man has been charged in connection with a series of thefts from boats in his community, police said.

Kyle William Marter, 29, has been formally charged with three counts of breaking and entering a boat, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office. Each crime is a felony punishable by five years in prison.

Marter was arraigned Friday in 41B District Court in Clinton Township, officials said. A magistrate ordered him held on a $5,000 bond and scheduled his next court appearance for Nov. 9.

Police said detectives were investigating the series of thefts, which happened during a two-week period earlier this month.

Last week Friday, a Harrison Township woman was checking on her boat docked near South River Road when she encountered a man on the vessel, the sheriff’s office said.

She confronted the man, who told her the boat belonged to an uncle and he was on the craft to prepare it for the winter.

As the man walked away from the boat, she took a photo of him with her cellphone, police said.

The picture was posted on social media and detectives received a tip about the man’s identity.

Police located the man and arrested him at his home on Thursday, officials said.
