A 60-year-old man died Sunday after apparently running into traffic on Gratiot in Chesterfield Township, according to police.

Ricky Jay Baker was struck around 6:05 p.m. on northbound Gratiot, south of 21 Mile, officials said. Police and fire personnel responded and Baker was transported by Medstar to McLaren Macomb Hospital, where he later died.

Baker initially was discovered lying down in the roadway with a 28-year-old male driver pulled to the side of the road in a 2003 Buick. The Columbiaville, Michigan, driver reported that he was traveling home from work when Baker "attempted to run across Gratiot...and ran directly in front of his vehicle," police said.

The driver had no time to stop or avoid the pedestrian. Witnesses gave similar accounts, according to police.

Officials do not believe alcohol, drugs or speed were factors in the crash. Additional witnesses are asked to contact Chesterfield Township Detective James Gates at (586) 949-3304.
