One family member is in custody in connection with the death of another in a suspected home arson fire early Friday morning that took the life of a 17-year-old Sterling Heights boy, police said.

Police officials won’t identify the 20-year-old man but did say he is a family member of the unidentified teen who died in the fire after he was trapped in an upstairs bedroom in the home in the 42000 block of Bloomingdale Drive around 3 a.m.

“I’m not sure of the exact location of where it started in the house but that part of the investigation is still ongoing. We have investigators working on that portion of it,” said police Lt. Dave Sarvello. “We’ll submit our findings to the Macomb County prosecutor’s office either later today or tomorrow for charges.”

Sarvello said when police and fire came on to the scene, they found four family members outside the home and they indicated a fifth family member was trapped inside where the fire raged. Those family members were treated at other hospitals for non-life threatening injuries, he said.

“We don’t know exactly what motivated him to do this at this point in time. We’re just not sure,” Sarvello said of the family member in custody. “We’re trying to work our way through the investigation.”
