The Arts Academy in the Woods in Fraser was evacuated Thursday afternoon and will be closed Friday after several students and teachers complained of illness, officials said.

A dozen students and two teachers were taken by ambulance to a hospital as a precaution, said Judy Pritchett, chief academic officer for the Macomb Intermediate School District, which authorizes the charter high school on Caroline Street, west of Utica Road.

Ten students and two teachers were released, according to a post Thursday evening on the school's Facebook page. Two other students were held and awaited blood test results, it said.

The school announced that classes would be canceled Friday as a result of the evacuation about 1 p.m. Thursday, when students and staff began having coughing issues, Pritchett said.

“That was the first clue that something was not normal,” she said.

The Fraser Public Safety Department and Macomb County Hazmat response team responded to the school. Both agencies are testing the air quality. It is unclear what the issue might be, Pritchett said.

Parents have been notified and are coming to the school to pick up students.
