Man wanted for spraying Roseville store clerk in face

Roseville Police are looking for a man who robbed a pipe and smoking accessories store and pepper-sprayed one of its employees in the face.

Roseville Deputy Police Chief Donald Glandon said the robbery happened about 11:50 a.m. May 5 at the BDT Smoke Shops store on Gratiot Avenue near Interstate 696.

Investigators are asking the public for help to find the suspect, Glandon said in a statement.

The suspect is described as a white male, about 5-feet-9-inches tall, in his late 20s or 30s with a thin build and scruffy facial hair. At the time of the robbery, the man was wearing a sunglasses, a dark baseball hat, dark gloves, dark jeans, red shoes with white soles and a fluorescent orange, hooded coat with gray stripes and black on the bottom, he said.

Police say the suspect went to the store about three hours before the robbery, made a purchase and then left.

He returned and spent about 15 minutes in the store before approaching a clerk at the cash register as if to buy something, officials said.

However, Glandon said the suspect sprayed the store’s employee in the face with what appeared to be pepper spray. The attacker took money from the cash register and the store employee’s cell phone before fleeing, he said.

Police have posted video of the suspect's two visits to the store captured by surveillance cameras on You Tube.

Glandon added the clerk did not require medical treatment.

Police searched the area with a canine unit but were not able to locate the suspect, according to authorities.

Officers found the employee’s cell phone on the corner of Demrick and Ivanhoe streets, about three blocks west of the smoke shop, Glandon said.

Anyone with information about the incident or the suspect should call Roseville Police at (586) 447-4510 or (586) 447-4484.
