The former site of a Warren topless bar is going to be turned into a Dairy Queen ice cream shop, according to Warren Mayor Jim Fouts.

Fouts said the long-vacant building for Jon Jon's strip club on Mound near Martin roads will be converted into a 4,149 square-foot Dairy Queen.

“Now, instead of a sexually-oriented business, we now have a family-oriented business in the center of our city," the mayor said in a statement. “The residents of the neighborhood next to the new business must be pleased by this new business that will include a drive-thru and outdoor seating."

Fouts said the city's planning commission approved the site plan for the project on Monday.

“This is truly a victory for Warren residents and an asset to our city," Fouts said. "It eliminates a long-standing chronic eyesore and replaces it with a national iconic, well-known family business.”

Jon Jon's had long been a lightning rod for controversy in Warren.

In 2010, current and prospective shareholders of the bar, Warren's only adult club, sued the city in Macomb County Circuit Court after the city council blocked ownership transfer.

Victoria Cerrito had owned the bar for 25 years until she sold 9 percent of it to Masoud Sesi, owner of Detroit-based Cheetahs, in 2008.

Jon Jon's shareholders eventually lost the case in federal court last year.
