A semitrailer caught fire Tuesday afternoon, affecting all eastbound lanes on Interstate 94 in Chesterfield Township.

Chesterfield Township police officials said the fire was put out within an hour and all lanes were shut down from I-94 at 21 Mile.

Chesterfield Fire Chief Douglas Charbonneau said the semitrailer likely caught on fire due to damaged brakes or a wheel bearing that overheated.

"The entire cab burned and the trailer eventually burned off, which was carrying 50,000 lbs of ground-up tires," Charbonneau said Wednesday. "It was a bit of a mess. We had to soak it with foam and water, but no one was hurt and we shut the freeway down for several hours."

The white semitrailer was labeled Environmental Wood Solutions, a wood waste recycling company based in Orion Township.
