Chesterfield Township Police are investigating a Sunday morning crash on Interstate 94 that claimed the life of a New Haven man.

Officials have identified the man as 46-year-old Mark Clegg.

Police said they received calls at 2:10 a.m. Sunday about a car accident on eastbound I-94 east of M-59.

Officers and firefighters found the victim and his heavily-damaged vehicle, a black 2005 Ford Expedition, off the roadway and at rest against a tree. The victim was the sole occupant, police said.

Firefighters removed the unresponsive motorist from the driver's seat and transported him to a hospital where he was declared dead, according to authorities.

Police closed down the freeway at M-59 while the accident was reconstructed, officials said.

Detectives said a preliminary investigation shows that icy road conditions may be have been a factor in the crash, and it's not known if drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision.

Police also said they have no eyewitnesses to the crash and ask anyone with information about it to call Chesterfield Township Police at (586) 949-2322.
