A 24-year-old driver died Monday after hitting a SMART bus in Roseville, police reported.

A preliminary investigation found the bus stopped to pick up a passenger on eastbound 12 Mile near Rosemont at about 8:40 p.m. when a Warren man in a 2001 Toyota Echo “was unable to stop and struck the back,” city officials said in a statement.

The motorist, the only person inside the car, was pronounced dead at a hospital, according to the release.

One of the bus passengers was transported for medical treatment with what appeared to be minor injuries, police said.

Investigators said it was too early to determine if distracted driving, alcohol or other substances were involved.

All lanes of 12 Mile at Rosemont remained closed as of 10:30 p.m. Monday as police investigated. There was no estimate when the road would reopen.
