An autopsy is planned Monday for a Clinton Township man whose body was found after he had been missing for over a week.

Keith Drake, 62, was found about 2 p.m. Sunday inside his van parked alongside a 7-Eleven store on Romeo Plank Road in Macomb Township, Clinton Township Police Captain Richard Maierle said Monday.

“It appears to be natural causes,” said Maierle. “We have no idea how long he was dead or might have been there. We hope an autopsy might answer some questions.”

Maierle said Drake, who is an independent appliance repairman who suffered from chronic back pain, was on a job about 11:30 a.m. on March 24 when he told his customer his back had gone out on him.

“The customer gave him an ice pack and Drake left,” Maierle said. “He called a person who handles his appointments and said he planned to go to the hospital and to cancel his appointments for the rest of the day.”

Drake, who Maeierle said lives alone about a block from the police station, did not show up for a dinner date on Sunday, or work the following Monday. He was reported as missing.

Relatives checked his home and found nothing unusual.

“We are puzzled by phone records which indicate his cellphone last ‘pinged’ around 10:55 a.m. on Sunday (March 25)  at 12 Mile and Van Dyke area,” said Maierle. “We are still trying to figure out why that might have happened. We suspect it is an error caused by rerouting of his phone.”

Maierle said Drake was found sitting in the front driver seat of the van. His wallet, valuables and car keys were all in the vehicle. Store employees weren’t certain but believe the van was parked there for at least two days.
