Sterling Heights -- Authorities are investigating an apartment fire in Sterling Heights Saturday that  may have been started by a child living in the residence.

Sterling Heights Fire Department dispatched at 8:40 a.m. to the Autumn Woods Apartments on Canal Road and Delco Boulevard on reports of a building fire.

Sterling Heights Fire Battalion Chief Mark Docherty said a couch caught on fire and quickly spread throughout the two-story apartment.

"It's suspected a child caused the fire," he said. "We were able to contain the fire to the single apartment."

Docherty said the fire caused extensive damage the unit and it  is unlivable.

The occupants of the residence made it out safely and no one was injured, he said.
