A two-vehicle crash Friday in Shelby Township has left one person dead, authorities announced.

Witnesses called police about 11:50 a.m. to report a silver Ram 1500 driving erratically on eastbound 23 Mile, investigators said in a statement. Minutes later, police learned the pickup had collided with a commercial box truck near Central Industrial Drive.

Both drivers were rushed to Beaumont Hospital in Troy. The pickup driver, identified as an 81-year-old man, died from his injuries. The other motorist, a 66-year-old man, was treated and released.

23 Mile was closed in both directions for hours while officials combed the accident scene.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the incident, but anyone who saw the crash or has information is asked to call the Shelby Township Police Department at (586) 731-2121, ext. 482.
