A Shelby Township police officer was injured Thursday after a driver struck a squad car.

The officer was responding to a call about a suicidal person armed with a knife when a motorist collided with the cruiser about 6 p.m. near 23 Mile and Van Dyke, investigators said in a statement.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor, officials said.

The officer was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the Shelby Township police traffic unit at (586) 731-2121, Ext. 470.
