A 20-year-old Warren man died Sunday after being pulled from the water Saturday night at Stony Creek Metropark in Shelby Township.

The drowning victim, who authorities identify as Rayven Elia of Sterling Heights, was in the water with a friend, a 20-year-old man from Warren, when the two hit a spot of heavy vegetation and had trouble swimming.

It was about 8 p.m. when someone saw them and notified police. Park police and the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office responded. Rescuers and a boater were able to rescue the man.

But Elia was underwater for about 15 minutes before rescuers pulled him out. They performed CPR and took him to a hospital where he died Sunday, the sheriff's office said in a release.

Neither man wore life jackets.
