Clinton Township police charged a man in a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian, officials said.

Brandon Ratliff, 38, of Mount Clemens was charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious injury or death, a five-year-felony, police said Tuesday.

A magistrate ordered him held on a $20,000 bond and scheduled a court appearance for Monday.

The crash took place at about 12:25 a.m. on July 2. Joseph Myron Canty, 34, of Clinton Township, was struck and killed by a vehicle while he walked on southbound Gratiot south of Wellington Crescent, according to authorities.

Canty was walking from the west side of the road to the east when a white truck hit him on its passenger side, police said. The crash broke off the truck's passenger-side mirror.

The driver did not stop after the crash, entering a car wash before fleeing northbound on Gratiot. A witness who heard the crash alerted authorities.

Officials said a police officer found the vehicle while checking an area of Mount Clemens.
