Sterling Heights police are investigating a crash between a car and a semi that claimed the life of a 20-year-old man, officials said.

Police said the crash happened at about 2 a.m. Tuesday on Mound Road south of Metropolitan Parkway. Mound Road was closed for about five hours to enable officers to investigate.

Officers were called to the scene of the crash to find a Ford Focus and a tractor-trailer truck had collided, according to authorities.

Firefighters arrived and found the lone occupant of the Focus, a 20-year-old Sterling Heights man, deceased, officials said. They are not releasing the victim's name at this time.

Police said a preliminary investigation showed the Focus was traveling north on Mound when it collided with the rear of the semi, which was stopped for a red traffic signal at a median crossover.

The truck's driver was not injured and is cooperating with police, officials said.

It is not know if drugs or alcohol were factors, they also said.

Anyone with information about the crash should call the Sterling Heights Police's Traffic Safety Bureau at (586) 446-2920.
