Warren — Funeral arrangements were set Saturday for 16-year-old Danyna Gibson, who was fatally stabbed this week at Fitzgerald High School.

Police said Gibson died Wednesday at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital in Madison Heights after her classmate stabbed her twice in the chest inside their second-period economics class. Police said there was animosity between the two girls — both straight-A honor roll students — because of a boy they liked.

Visitation for Gibson is Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Hutchison Funeral Home, at 6051 East Seven Mile in Detroit.

Her funeral is Wednesday at New St. Paul Missionary Church, at 21050 Ascension Avenue in Warren. Family hour is at 10:30 a.m. and the funeral service is 11 a.m., according to the funeral home.

Tanaya Lanay Lewis, 17, was charged with first-degree murder Friday for stabbing Gibson once in the chest striking her heart and then in the back with a kitchen-style steak knife. A Warren police investigator said during the arraignment that Lewis smiled and laughed as she chased Gibson through the high school.

Lewis could spend up to life behind bars if convicted. Under state law, all 17-year-olds are charged as adults if arrested for any offense.

Gibson was involved in the National Honor Society, the school's cross country team, student council, robotics club, color guard and marching band.

A parent of a marching band member started a GoFundMe account to support Gibson’s funeral. As of Saturday, it raised $2,700.

“I want to thank everyone for their donations, the Fitzgerald marching band is looking at presenting Danyna’s family with the funds on September 21st during our Fitzgerald home game halftime, everyone is welcome,” wrote organizer Lisa Trisch.  “Danyna is truly missed.”
