Eastpointe — Two people were killed and another is in critical condition Saturday after a home in Eastpointe caught fire, police said.

Eastpointe police said they received a 911 call at 7 a.m. of a structure fire near Nevada and Toepher. When they arrived, they found a home engulfed in flames.

Police said one family member escaped the fire and three others were trapped inside. Eastpointe Fire Department rescued the three victims from the home. Two of the victims, a man and woman — both 40 years old, died at the scene.

Surviving family members were transported to the hospital for treatment. One victim is in critical condition and the other who was able to escape is in stable condition, police said.

Eastpointe police and fire investigators are working with state and local partners to determine the cause of the fire.

They said it is unclear if there were smoke detectors in the home.
