Warren — Three teenagers — two 16-year-old boys and a 17-year-old girl — face criminal charges after a melee last week at Warren's Fitzgerald High School, in which two staff members were hurt, police said.

Police commissioner Bill Dwyer said it all started with an argument in a lunch line on Nov. 8 that resulted in the males planning to fight after school.

When the school bell rang, some "150 to 200" people gathered in the parking lot to watch the fight.

But Fitzgerald's School Resource Officer and two members of his team got wind of the fight and worked to break it up. The two team members, school staffers who assisted the officer, were hurt in the violence.

One of the male staffers suffered a broken tooth. The other suffered a leg injury.

The male suspects and the female suspect have all been held out of school since the fight. The girl faces charges in the adult system, while the two teens face charges in the juvenile system, Dwyer said.

The girl faces two counts of assault and battery and one count of disorderly conduct.

One of the boys faces one count of aggravated assault and another count of disturbing the peace.

The other male faces one count of disturbing the peace.

"We're not going to tolerate this kind of behavior at any school in Warren," Dwyer said. "Ninety-nine percent of students are there to learn."

The fight is the second high-profile violent incident at Fitzgerald High since the 2018-19 school year began.

On just the fifth day of school, a 16-year-old girl, Danyna Gibson, was fatally stabbed by what police described as a fellow straight-A student. A 17-year-old girl, Tayana Lewis, faces a first-degree murder charge in Danyna's death. Police say she laughed as she chased her victim.

"I hope people don't give Fitzgerald a black eye for this," Dwyer said. "This can happen anywhere. It's a safe school."

Fitzgerald Public Schools could not immediately be reached.
