Sterling Heights — A police attempt to investigate a public argument early Monday resulted in officers shooting a man who allegedly pointed a gun their way, police said.

The incident took place about 3:30 a.m. on the 40000 block of Bonaparte, which is north of 19 Mile and just west of Van Dyke.

Police were called to "investigate the sound of a group of people arguing in the street," according to a statement from Sterling Heights Police Department.

As they approached, police say "a subject exited the home and presented a weapon toward the officers," who fired their weapons at the man, hitting him multiple times.

Police say the man was taken to a hospital and is listed in critical condition.

Michigan State Police will investigate the officer-involved shooting.
