St. Clair Shores — A police officer is recovering after a driver crashed into his vehicle early Sunday morning, according to officials.

Michigan State Police officials said the crash happened at about 3:10 a.m. Sunday on westbound Interstate 94 at Little Mack.

A St. Clair Shores police officer was blocking the right and center lanes of westbound I-94 with his vehicle because of an earlier crash when another car slammed into him, authorities said.

According to the state police's preliminary investigation, the vehicle that crashed into the parked officer was driven by a 34-year-old man. Officials said alcohol is a factor in the crash.

Both the officer and the motorist were taken to a hospital.

Officials with the St. Clair Shores Fire Department said the officer was in stable condition and expected to be discharged.

State police said the at-fault driver is listed in serious but stable condition.

The St. Clair Shores Police Officers Association also posted a message on its Facebook about the incident.

"This is why you slow down and move over when approaching accident scenes. Thankfully the Officer involved in this crash is going to be ok."
