Ray Township — A Capac woman died Tuesday after a car crash involving two vehicles and a deer, officials said.

The victim has been identified as Erika Ladas, 28, according to the Macomb County Sheriff's Office.

Ladas was a dispatcher for the Sheriff's Office and had been with the office since January.

“Erika was an asset to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office in her short time here," Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said in a statement. "She was a part of our law enforcement family. She worked diligently in dispatch to provide public safety to

citizens in need. Our condolences are with her family.”

Deputies were called at about 7:20 a.m. Tuesday to North Avenue and 31 Mile, according to authorities.

A preliminary investigation showed a silver Chevrolet Captiva was traveling on North Avenue when it struck a deer north of 31 Mile. The driver, a 40-year-old Armada woman, was not injured.

The deer was thrown into oncoming traffic and crashed through the windshield of a white Ford 500 that was heading north on North Avenue. Police said the Ford, which Ladas was driving, veered off the road and struck a tree.

Medics took Ladas to a hospital where she died from her injuries, officials said.

Deputies continue to investigate. It's not known if seat belts were worn, but alcohol does not appear to have been a factor, officials said.

On Wednesday, the sheriff's office thanked the community for its outpouring of support for Ladas.

"We are grateful for your kind words and appreciate your compassion," it said through its official Twitter account. "The Michigan (Fraternal Order of Police ) has created a fund that will help the family of Erika."

Donations to the fund can be made on the group's web site or mailed to MIFOP Foundation, 1457 E. 12 Mile, Madison Heights, MI 48071.
