Harper Woods man charged in road worker's death

Associated Press

St. Clair Shores — A man accused of striking and killing a highway worker on Interstate 94 was charged Friday with two felonies.

Martin Smith, 51, of Harper Woods appeared in court on two charges related to the hit-and-run death of Zach Morisette, who worked for the Macomb County road department.

Morisette, 26, was struck Monday while working on I-94 near Nine Mile.

State police said investigators discovered the vehicle before Smith turned himself in Wednesday. The identity of Smith’s attorney wasn’t immediately known.

Morisette, who lived in Chesterfield Township, had survived cancer.

Jeremy Zeitz, 40, was struck and killed Thursday while working on Sherwood Highway over Interstate 69 in Eaton County.

“We implore you to slow down and drive through work zones as if it was your own workplace,” said Paul Ajegba, head of the state Transportation Department.
