Hundreds pray at Hart Plaza for Christians in Iraq
Hundreds of people participated Friday in a prayer vigil at Hart Plaza in Detroit in support of Iraqi Christians who are being oppressed or killed during the fighting in Iraq. The vigil organized by Metro Detroit’s Chaldean community was led by recently installed Bishop Francis Kalabat of the Chaldean Eparchy of St. Thomas the Apostle in Southfield. Friday’s was the latest in a number of area protests to raise awareness of the issue.
Many have called on the White House to intervene more in the crisis in Iraq. The U.S. has sent military advisers and has been bombing positions held by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. Also in attendance Friday was Catholic Archbishop Allen Vigneron.
