Volunteers to take furniture to Metro flooding victims
Detroit — A human and civil rights organization is seeking volunteers to help distribute furniture to families whose belongings were damaged after heavy rains left basements and homes flooded.
Focus: HOPE says anyone wanting to help should meet Friday and Saturday at its food warehouse at 1200-B Oakman Boulevard on Detroit’s west side. Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.
Art Van has donated nearly $350,000 in sofas, mattresses and carpet remnants for about 500 southeast Michigan families. Focus: HOPE says donated furniture also is being distributed by ACCESS and Jewish Family Service.
Gov. Rick Snyder declared a state of disaster for Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties after the Aug. 11 storms. Some areas received more than 6 inches of rain.
