Detroit Goodfellows to honor Detroit Police Department
The Old Newsboys’ Goodfellow Fund of Detroit will honor the Detroit Police Department during its 25th annual Tribute Breakfast, the charity announced Tuesday.
The event will be 8 a.m. Nov. 19 at Cobo Center. The police department will receive the Edward H. McNamara Goodfellow of the Year Award.
“Without the support of the Detroit Police Department, the Detroit Goodfellows would not be able to distribute 35,000 holiday gift packages to needy local children,” said Therese R. Yglesias, Detroit Goodfellows president, in a statement Tuesday. “Recognizing them with the Edward H. McNamara Goodfellow of the Year Award is an honor for our organization.”
The 100-year-old charity will also recognize Sen. Carl Levin and U.S. Rep. John Dingell, longtime advocates for the Detroit Goodfellows.
Revenue raised from the event will fund the organization’s goal to raise $1.25 million this year, according to organizers. The funds will provide 35,000 holiday gift packages of clothing, toys, books and candy for needy children in Detroit, Hamtramck, Harper Woods, Highland Park and River Rouge.
The Detroit Goodfellows raises about $1.2 million annually to fund its programs.
Tickets are $150. For information, call (586) 775-6139 or visit www.detroitgoodfellows.org.
