Woman dies in Detroit house fire
Detroit — A 53-year-old woman died in a house fire located on Detroit’s eastside Saturday morning.
Rita Walker’s body was found in the bedroom of her home in the 18600 block of St. Louis, near 7 Mile and Mt. Elliott.
Detroit Fire Department Captain Patrick McNulty said a mail carrier saw smoke coming from the house and alerted a neighbor who then called authorities. The fire is under investigation said McNulty and the cause of death will be determined by the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Her mother Ola Walker, 74, said her daughter worked for the Detroit Department of Transportation as a bus driver for nearly 18 years. She added that her daughter received many awards for her professionalism.
The younger Walker has one daughter and one grandchild.
“She was a wonderful person,” said Walker of her daughter. “She would give the shirt off her back to anybody.”
