Detroit — It’s never too early to start holiday planning, and volunteers of the nonprofit Higher Hopes! got to work packaging nonperishable food items at Gleaners Food Bank this weekend.

The work Saturday was in preparation for the first Thanksgiving dinner kit distribution by Higher Hopes! in Detroit to families in need on Nov. 24. The kits will be handed out to 1,000 Metro Detroit Head Start families at four locations.

Higher Hopes! was founded by William Birndorf after he saw a television interview with a woman who could not afford to feed her family last Thanksgiving.
