Michigan DNR assists Western firefighting teams
Lansing — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says 31 of its employees are helping contain Western wildfires.
A 20-member crew with firefighter training was sent to Medford, Oregon, and joined a force battling a 20-acre fire in rugged terrain. The other 11 employees are working in Oregon, California, Washington state and Idaho.
Forest Resources Division chief Bill O’Neill says the DNR will continue helping fire suppression efforts where needs remain critical.
Nine large, uncontained fires and around 130 smaller ones are burning around the U.S.
O’Neill says plenty of DNR firefighters are available for duty in Michigan if needed.
