Sheriff: Lake Leelanau teen causes fatal crash
Suttons Bay — A Lake Leelanau teen driver could face criminal charges in a deadly two-vehicle crash that authorities say was caused by reckless driving.
The Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office says a 16-year-old driver with two teen passengers ran a stop sign Saturday in Centerville Township. The teenagers’ friends tell police the car driver didn’t stop because he wanted to “catch air” for a “roller coaster effect.” The friends were following in another vehicle.
The teens crashed into a pickup driven by 31-year-old Brian Nachazel of Cedar. Nachazel was ejected from his truck and killed.
Two 16-year-olds were in fair condition at an area hospital Monday while a 17-year-old was in critical condition.
Sheriff Mike Borkovich says investigators don’t know how fast the car was going but it’s classified as reckless driving.
