2nd person dies after wrong-way freeway crash in West Michigan
Wright Township — Authorities say a second person has died following a wrong-way crash on Interstate 96 in West Michigan.
The Ottawa County sheriff’s department says in a statement that 79-year-old Shirley VanHoeven of Montague died Monday night at a hospital. She was a passenger in a car driven by her 80-year-old husband, Donald VanHoeven.
Officials earlier said that 81-year-old Donna Laymon of Grand Rapids died in the Friday afternoon crash in Wright Township. She was in a car driven by her 83-year-old husband that went airborne over a berm and onto a freeway exit ramp.
Leslie Laymon continued driving about 1,000 feet west in the freeway’s eastbound lanes before the collision with the VanHoevens’ car.
Authorities say Leslie Laymon and Donald VanHoeven were hospitalized after the crash, which is under investigation.
