Man convicted in fatal shooting at Kalamazoo bar
Kalamazoo — A 24-year-old man faces sentencing next month after being convicted of second-degree murder in a shooting death at a Kalamazoo sports bar.
The Kalamazoo Gazette reports a jury on Thursday returned the verdict in the case against Orlando Mitchell. He faces up to life in prison, but would be eligible for parole. Sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 20.
Authorities say Mitchell fatally shot 23-year-old Damian Tejada inside the Wayside West bar. Witnesses testified that Mitchell stood over Tejada in the bar’s poker room as he fired the final shots.
Mitchell’s attorney told jurors that Mitchell, who was working at the bar, acted in self-defense after Tejada threated to assault him and shoot up the bar, and then later struck Mitchell in the head with a glass object.
