Burdell Township — Osceola County authorities say a mother black bear and her cub have died after multiple vehicles hit them while they crossed a highway.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Christopher Lockhart tells the Grand Rapids Press about seven or eight vehicles hit the mother bear before she made it to the side of U.S. 131 and died early Thursday. They say none of the drivers reported injuries or damage.

Lockhart says the bear’s two cubs are believed to have gone searching for her a couple hours later. He says the cubs tried to cross the same portion of road where their mother was hit. A vehicle fatally hit one of the cubs. The other cub ran into the woods.

Lockhart says bears are often hit in the area and about eight similar crashes happen each year.
