Traverse City — A Grand Traverse County playground is closed after test results showed elevated arsenic levels in its soil.

The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports more than 2,000 community members helped build the Kid’s Kove playground at the Civic Center 18 years ago, but it hasn’t been properly maintained in recent years.

Deborah Nesbit was on the committee in charge at the time and says the problem was preventable. She said during a county commission meeting this week that sealant or stains should have been applied to the wood to prevent the chemical exposure, as recommended by the playground manufacturer and federal authorities.

County officials last applied a sealant to the playground in 2008. Officials at the meeting said they didn’t know why it hadn’t been treated since.
