Montague — Local leaders and activists are celebrating the anticipated removal of White Lake in Muskegon County from a list of toxic hot spots in the Great Lakes region.

Federal officials are expected to take that step by the end of this year or early in 2015, following prolonged cleanup and restoration work.

White Lake was declared a Great Lakes “area of concern” in 1985 because of severe environmental degradation, primarily from industrial and municipal wastes. The area includes wetlands at the river mouth and extends to Lake Michigan.

MLive.com reports the 7 p.m. celebration Thursday will be at a bookstore in Montague.

On the program are a presentation on White Lake’s pollution history and recovery and remarks from dignitaries. Area school pupils are participating as well.
