Cadillac — Police say an 84-year-old Cadillac woman who was found dead after a house fire had entered a burning room to try to save her cat.

Authorities say Myrtle VanNatter was found dead in her home after the fire early Sunday. Police say autopsy results are pending.

VanNatter’s roommate, 73-year-old Nancy Shoop, told firefighters she last saw VanNatter going back into her burning room to retrieve her cat. Firefighters later found VanNatter’s body in the room and the cat’s body nearby.

Cadillac Fire Marshal Anthony Wolff says a space heater may have caused the fire. Flames spread to several rooms in the house.

Shoop received medical treatment for smoke inhalation.
