Grand Rapids — A western Michigan man who fatally threw and stomped on a cat in front of a crowd that included children has been sentenced to prison.

A Kent County judge sentenced Michael Stackhouse of Cedar Rapids to 16 months to 9 years in state prison Tuesday. Stackhouse was found guilty of felony animal abuse causing death in October. His previous convictions including drug and sexual conduct crimes boosted his sentence.

Witnesses testified that Stackhouse threw the cat about 30 feet from his mobile home in April before stomping on its head twice. A crowd of roughly 15 to 20 people watched the incident.

Stackhouse had asked the judge to give him county jail time with work release to the Kent County Animal Shelter.
