Cherry festival will stay near July 4
Traverse City — City commissioners have reversed an earlier decision about the National Cherry Festival and will no longer try to separate the event from the Fourth of July.
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports the commission decided last week not to set up a review committee to consider moving festival dates. The commissioners had first dropped the idea in September but this month asked the city manager to set up the review.
Commissioner Barbara Budros had led calls for separating the eight-day July festival from the holiday but now says there isn’t enough interest to do so among commissioners or the public.
Commissioners instead instructed the city manager to draft a new cost structure for the festival. They want to change the festival fee structure to reduce costs to the city.
