Christmas forecast: Rain, snow ... then warmer temps

Those dreaming of a white Christmas in Metro Detroit might be rewarded — at least in the morning.

“From midnight to 7 a.m., we’re looking at snowfall accumulation of 1-2 inches,” said Matt Mosteiko, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in White Lake Township.

The weather service says the region will see rain on Christmas Eve changing over to snow early on the holiday. But temperatures are forecast rise to around 40 degrees during the day.

“It may snow, but it may melt,” Mosteiko said.

That follows a wet, mild pattern to kick off the holiday.

Temperatures at Detroit Metro Airport reached 39 degrees Monday but are expected to rise overnight, the weather service said.

Showers are forecast Tuesday, when highs could reach the upper 40s with rain showers.

The low temperature will be about 40 degrees with a continued chance of rain.

Warmer readings are expected again Wednesday.

“We have a 90 percent chance of rain throughout the day on Christmas Eve with highs in the upper 40s,” said Steve Considine, another weather service meteorologist.

“The low for the evening will be 30 to 35 with a chance of the rain turning over into light snow. It will also get windy, with gusts of 30 to 35 mph, possibly higher.”

Highs on Friday could reach the 40s again before dropping back into the 30s for the weekend, according to NWS.

The normal high temperature for this time in December is 34 degrees with a normal low of 22.

While the warmth might spoil some Christmas wishes, “it’s pretty common to see the pattern of a few days above normal” this time of year, Mosteiko said.
