Frenchtown Township — The Monroe County sheriff’s department says it used a helicopter to help rescue two men who drove onto ice floating into Lake Erie.

Sheriff Dale Malone says the men ages 28 and 29 took a four-wheel vehicle to fish Sunday morning when the ice broke off, and one of them called 911 for help.

The sheriff says the Frenchtown Township and Estral Beach fire departments responded, with help from a sheriff’s helicopter. He says firefighters reached the men about 11:10 a.m. and brought them to shore uninjured.

Malone says the men were about one mile from Brest Bay Marine in Frenchtown Township, about 20 miles north of Toledo, Ohio.

Malone says a private company is working to recover the four-wheeler.
