One firefighter was injured Tuesday afternoon while battling a large fire in Unadilla Township, officials said.

The blaze happened around 1 p.m. Tuesday at Unadilla Store, the township's longtime general store. The store sits on Unadilla Road in Livingston County.

The firefighter was taken to University of Michigan Hospital, said township Treasurer Julie Weiland. His condition is unknown.

The fire, which was extinguished by 4 p.m., destroyed the store and a two-story wood house that sat next door, Weiland said.

"In downtown Unadilla the store is the main attraction," she said.

One man called the township to say he could see the fire as far away as Stockbridge which sits six miles to the west, Weiland said.

Fire departments that assisted Unadilla were: Fowlerville, Brighton, Putnam Township, Green Oak Township, Howell, Hamburg Township, Stockbridge, Chelsea, Dexter, Scio Township and Manchester.

The Unadilla Store, one of the oldest stores in the county, opened in 1873. It carries food, fishing accessories and gifts.
