Sleet, snow may make mess of Thursday
The weather forecast for Wednesday?
But things get a bit dicier on Thursday when a combination of snow and sleet are expected to move into the metro area, according to forecasters at the National Weather Service at the White Lake Township station.
"Wednesday is expected to be cloudy with a high of about 30 degrees," meteorologist Matt Mosteiko said. "But then we'll see about a 40 percent chance of snow beginning after 2 a.m. Thursday. That will increase to about an 80 percent chance during the day on Thursday and then tapering off after about 7 p.m."
According to the weather service, the total accumulation for the metro area will only be about 1/2 to 1 inch.
"Just enough to shovel or to make people drive slower on the roads," Mosteiko said. "But we're looking at a high of about 33 degrees on Thursday, so there's a chance we could see some sleety rain mixed in with the snow."
Unlike the East Coast, southeastern Michigan has received a below average amount of snow for winter.
"The normal amount of snow to today's date is 22.1 inches," Mosteiko said. "So far we've received 17.4 inches. However, we received 13.3 inches in December when the normal is 10.9, so we're below normal for the year but above normal for December.
"It all averages out."
Friday is expected to be sunny with a high near 20 and with no snow in the forecast.
A check of arriving and departing flights at Detroit Metropolitan Airport at 7:30 a.m. showed one cancellation for a flight to New York City.
It was a different story for arrivals with flights canceled from Boston, Newark and New York City.
