Mich. barn fire kills at least 5 cows
Fairgrove — Authorities say a barn fire in Michigan’s agricultural Thumb region killed at least five cows, but quick action at the farm saved dozens of others.
WNEM-TV reports about 80 cows were inside the Fairgrove-area barn in Tuscola County on Thursday afternoon when the fire started. WSGW-AM reports one person suffered hand burns and required treatment.
Fairgrove fire Chief Douglas Young says crews counted five cows that didn’t survive, but he credited everyone for pitching in to save others.
Crews from eight different fire departments worked to knock down the flames and were on scene for nearly nine hours. Farmers and ranchers from around the region also converged on the farm to help round up cattle and give them temporary homes.
The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known.
