Boiler room explosion prompts evacuation in Flint

Flint — Officials say an explosion in a boiler room has prompted the evacuation of buildings at the Whaley Children’s Center in Flint.

The Flint Journal reports there are no injuries following the explosion Wednesday morning.

Flint fire Chief David Cox Jr. says the explosion blew out an exterior window in a building and caused some damage to the boiler room. There was a small fire, but he says it went out on its own. Officials say there were no children in the building at the time.

Kevin Roach, president and CEO of Whaley Children’s Center, says staff quickly left the building. He says everyone, including children, was evacuated from other buildings on the campus as a precaution. The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
