Grand Rapids plans $10M land purchase for green space

Associated Press

Grand Rapids — Grand Rapids plans to seek a state grant to make a $10 million purchase of about four acres of property along the Grand River for use as green space.

The Grand Rapids Press reports the Kent County property once was proposed for riverfront housing. A City Commission hearing on an application to the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund will be scheduled for March 10 at Innovation Central High School.

Eric DeLong, deputy city manager, says the purchase of six parcels owned by the county, city and Michigan State University ties into flood protection and the planned removal of river dams.

Grand Rapids is working on a new downtown plan and also looking at 15 sites along the river for enhanced flood protection.
