Pittsfield Township — About 10 students were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries Friday afternoon after a crash involving two school buses, officials said.

Five school buses from Saline Middle School were traveling on Carpenter Road near Morgan Road shortly before 1 p.m. when one school bus rear-ended the other, said Pittsfield Township Fire Chief Sean Gleason.

Ten of the 22 students aboard the two buses were taken to University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. The parents of other children with minor injuries came to the accident site to pick up their children.

The eighth-grade students were returning from a class trip to see the movie "Selma" at a nearby theater, Gleason said.

The accident closed both northbound lanes and one southbound lane on Carpenter for about two hours Friday afternoon.
